Former spokesperson for student protests Carlos van Eck is running for chair of the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) — with the support of the largest student party.

Geschiedenisstudent, voormalig woordvoerder van de Amsterdam Encampment & oud-studentenraadslid Carlos van Eck stelt zich kandidaat voor het voorzitterschap van het College van Bestuur (CvB) van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Zijn kandidatuur wordt ondersteund door de Activistenpartij UvA (AP), de grootste studentenpartij op de Universiteit van Amsterdam die zijn oproep voor een democratische universiteit en een bestuur vanuit de eigen gelederen deelt.

Carlos van Eck heeft zich als protest tegen de gang van zaken op de UvA gemeld als kandidaat voor het voorzitterschap van het College van Bestuur (CvB). In zijn motivatiebrief pleit Van Eck voor een democratisch gekozen College van Bestuur bestaande uit studenten, docenten en medewerkers, gekozen door de universitaire gemeenschap zelf. Hij hekelt het huidige bestuursmodel dat volgens hem “vastzit in ondoorzichtige managementstructuren zonder mandaat of visie”.

Van Eck, die woordvoerder was van de Amsterdam Encampment tijdens de bezetting van de Oudemanhuispoort in 2024 én in het dagelijks bestuur van de centrale studentenraad heeft gezeten, benadrukt dat de UvA onmiddellijk haar banden moet verbreken met academische instellingen en bedrijven die medeplichtig zijn aan de genocide in Gaza, excuses moet aanbieden voor politiegeweld op de campus, en een einde moet maken aan de voortdurende bezuinigingen op onderwijs en personeel. 

“We hebben een bestuur nodig dat verantwoordelijkheid neemt — niet één dat zich verschuilt achter commissies of consultancyrapporten,” stelt Van Eck. “De universiteit is van ons allemaal: studenten, docenten en staf. Alleen als we die gemeenschap democratisch laten besturen, kunnen we echt vooruit.”

Activistenpartij UvA, de grootste studentenpartij op de Universiteit van Amsterdam met 6 van de 14 zetels in de Centrale Studentenraad, een overgrote meerderheid op verschillende faculteiten en een belangrijke organisator in de studentenprotesten, ondersteunt de kandidatuur van Carlos van Eck. 

“Carlos van Eck vertegenwoordigt precies de omslag die wij willen zien,” zegt een woordvoerder van de Activistenpartij UvA. “Een CvB dat niet langer bestaat uit carrièrebestuurders van buitenaf, maar uit mensen die geworteld zijn in het dagelijks leven van studenten en docenten. Zijn kandidatuur is een duidelijke aanklacht tegen het bestuursmodel van onze universiteit.”

De Activistenpartij UvA ziet in Van Eck’s kandidatuur een belangrijk signaal richting de universitaire politiek: het is tijd om het monopolie van externe bestuurders te doorbreken en de macht terug te leggen waar die hoort — de universitaire gemeenschap zelf.

History student, former spokesperson for the Amsterdam Encampment, and former student council member Carlos van Eck is running for chair of the Executive Board (CvB) of the University of Amsterdam. His candidacy is supported by the Activistenpartij UvA (AP), the largest student party at the University of Amsterdam, which shares his call for a democratic university and a board drawn from its own ranks.

Carlos van Eck has announced his candidacy for the chairmanship of the Executive Board (CvB) in protest against the state of affairs at the UvA. In his letter of motivation, Van Eck argues for a democratically elected Executive Board consisting of students, lecturers, and staff, elected by the university community itself. He criticizes the current governance model, which he believes is “stuck in opaque management structures without a mandate or vision.”

Van Eck, who was spokesperson for the Amsterdam Encampment during the occupation of the Oudemanhuispoort in 2024 and has served on the daily board of the central student council, emphasizes that the UvA must immediately sever its ties with academic institutions and companies that are complicit in the genocide in Gaza, apologize for police violence on campus, and put an end to ongoing cuts to education and staff.

“We need a board that takes responsibility — not one that hides behind committees or consultancy reports,” says Van Eck. “The university belongs to all of us: students, lecturers, and staff. Only if we allow that community to be governed democratically can we really move forward.”

Activistenpartij UvA, the largest student party at the University of Amsterdam with 6 of the 14 seats on the Central Student Council, a large majority in various faculties, and a key organizer in the student protests, supports Carlos van Eck’s candidacy.

“Carlos van Eck represents exactly the change we want to see,” says a spokesperson from the Activistenpartij UvA. “A Board of Directors that no longer consists of career administrators from outside, but of people who are rooted in the daily lives of students and teachers. His candidacy is a clear indictment of our university’s governance model.”

The Activistenpartij sees Van Eck’s candidacy as an important signal to university politics: it is time to break the monopoly of external administrators and return power to where it belongs — the university community itself.
