Power to the students!
I am a first year Brain and Cognitive Sciences Msc student. Although I am a first year UvA student, I quickly became enamored by the energy of the student community here. Besides my study, I am involved in multiple social justice movements, such as Palestine solidarity or climate change activism. My commitment to these causes informs my broader vision: I want to help build a democratic and representative university that actively listens to its students and their concerns.
I am running for student council to fight for a democratic and open UvA, where student voices are actively heard. We have seen over the last year the aggressive crackdown of student-led movements by the CvB. Police violence against peaceful student protests is unacceptable. Draconian house rules that limit our freedom of assembly and speech are unacceptable. We therefore need a student council and a university that stands up for and defends its students, from the police and from outside agitators. I would like to work towards that goal next year.
Secondly, I believe that the university should act more for better housing policy for its students. It is unacceptable that we have students who are homeless studying at UvA. But even if you have accommodation, criminal landlords think they can get away with asking whatever rent they want. We need to see the university understand the urgency of this situation and actively lobby for more student accommodation, and we need more collaboration with organisations that promote the rights of renters. These changes would promote student wellbeing and ensure an accessible university.
